Our Grade 4 students had the opportunity to attend the Bighouse program in Squamish, BC for two days, living as the First Nations peoples of the Cheakumus lived 2000 years ago.  This was possible with the support of volunteer Parent Elders and the classroom parents.  A wonderful learning experience to learn the three major understandings of the First Nations Culture:  Seasonality, Sharing and Respect.
We couldn't have asked for better weather!!!  I've never been there when it has been dry, sunny and crisp!!  We had a lovely time!!  Please make sure to check out our pictures.... coming soon!!!

Big decisions are being made.... "Where is the sleeping bag from the summer?  Could I borrow your boots?  Where are those fleece pants from last year's ski season?  Should I bring one raincoats or two? Let's check the weather site again for the Squamish valley!!!" The bags are getting packed, hopefully the students will make sure to get enough sleep and be organized to eat a good breakfast on Tuesday morning before we all meet at the Cates Park upper parking lot at 7:30 am.  We are off to the Bighouse for an overnight stay!!

The gr. 5 Social Studies program continues from where we left off in Gr. 4, having learned about Canada's Aboriginal peoples, the coming of the explorers and the development of Canadian society.  Now, students will look at  how the past has shaped what Canada is today.

This term, students will be studying Canada's varied physical regions, the natural resources throughout Canada and also beginning to make connections between BC's past and present.

We are looking for Parent Elders volunteers who would be willing to attend an orientation on the weekend of the 22 and 23rd of September as well as attending the Bighouse overnight with us on October 9th and 10th (Tuesday, Wednesday).
In class, we are getting prepared to make this very special moment at the Bighouse in Squamish a wonderful learning opportunity.
