We are starting fractions in class and I have just discovered this new Math website.  Click here to start practicing.

•  Click on Fractions
•  Listen once to the Fraction Tutorial for review
•  Play Simple fractions Matching
    (start with level 1)

I encourage all students to be practicing basic operations skills so that by the end of this year, you have increased your automaticity (and speed).  Knowing your basic facts automatically is such an advantage when we use bigger numbers!

Recommendations:
•  download Mathmateer Free (used to be Rocket Math): a free iPad app to practice
basic operations easy, medium and hard levels
•  flash cards:  make your own, or check out this website to purchase three corner flash cards (learning number families)
•  check this website  to print out practice sheets for various math concepts

Hand trick to help you multiply by 9!!
A really cool way to help you with multiplication tables between 6 X 6 to 10 X 10.  Let me know if you figure this out!!  Once you know the tricks you can always find the answer to your multiplication questions!!

The aim of the Mathematics curriculum is to provide students with opportunities to further their knowledge, skills and attitudes related to mathematics.  Students will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary through the four major components:
  Number
  •  automaticity of basic facts (+ - x ÷)
  •  develop an understanding of place value (gr. 4:  numbers to 10 000  &
                                          gr. 5 up to 1 000 000)
  •  perform multiplication and division with larger numbers (up to 3 digit by 1 digit)
  •  develop strategies for multiplication and division facts
  •  develop an understanding of fractions less than or equal to one
  •  develop an understanding of decimal numbers (place value)
  •  develop fluency with addition and subtraction of decimal numbers
  •  learn, know and use various problem-solving strategies
             -  develop estimation and Mental Math strategies
             -  express problems as equations and solve
Shape and Space
•  read and record time (digital and analog) gr. 4
•  read and record calendar dates (variety of formats) gr.4
•  demonstrate an understanding of perimeter and area (regular and irregular 2D shapes)
•  describe characteristics of 3-D  objects and 2-D shapes; analyse relationship gr. 5
• can design and construct different rectangles given perimeter or area gr. 5
•  can construct rectangular prism for a given volume gr. 5
•  describe relationship between mL and L; determine capacity of a given container gr.5
Patterns and Relations
•  identify and describe patterns
•  reproduce patterns
•  represent and describe patterns and relationships
•  identify and explain mathematical relationships
Statistics and Probability
•  data analysis:  can collect, display and analyse data as well as interpreting varied graphs
•  describe likelihood of single outcome
•  design and conduct probability experiment
